Youth to Power: A Community Response to South Africa’s Youth Crisis
South Africa’s youth unemployment crisis continues to threaten the country’s social and economic future. Across many communities, young people face limited opportunities, rising poverty, substance abuse, and growing frustration about their future. In response to these challenges, the Youth to Power Network has emerged as a community-driven initiative focused on empowering young people through entrepreneurship, skills development, and social awareness.
Established in 2022 in Protea Glen, Soweto, by Thapelo Letsie, who formed this campaign to support government efforts aimed at job creation by equipping unemployed youth with practical marketing and communications skills.
The initiative seeks to encourage young people to establish sustainable businesses that can create employment opportunities within their own communities.
One of the most important aspects of the campaign is its focus on changing attitudes toward entrepreneurship. Rather than waiting for employment opportunities to emerge, Youth to Power encourages young people to become active participants in economic development. This shift in mindset is critical in a country where formal employment opportunities remain limited, particularly for the youth.
The campaign also addresses the broader social consequences of unemployment. Many unemployed young people are vulnerable to drug abuse, alcohol dependency, depression, and criminal activities due to financial stress and hopelessness. The campaign recognises that economic hardship affects not only individuals but entire communities, creating cycles of violence, instability, and social decay.
By tackling these issues directly, Youth to Power positions itself as more than a business initiative — it is a social intervention aimed at restoring hope and purpose among young people.
Partnerships also play a crucial role in the initiative’s vision. The involvement of development agencies, local businesses, and community stakeholders highlights the importance of collaboration in addressing unemployment. Sustainable development cannot be achieved by government alone; it requires active participation from communities, organisations, and the private sector.
Another encouraging feature of the campaign is its emphasis on evaluation and accountability. The programme outlines a structured process of monitoring activities, assessing outcomes, and identifying areas for improvement. This demonstrates a willingness to learn from experience and ensure that the campaign remains effective and impactful over time.
Ultimately, Youth to Power represents a positive example of community leadership and youth empowerment. In a society where unemployment often leads to despair and social instability, initiatives like this provide an alternative narrative — one centred on opportunity, resilience, and self-development.
